  • SUMMARY:
Our research is directed towards the inner ear, including hearing loss and vestibular disorders. Mechanisms and innovative treatment strategies for inner ear diseases are being explored. Examples of diseases are genetic hearing loss, congenital cytomegalovirus-associated inner ear disease and drug-induced hearing loss. The predominant animal model is the mouse as mice are highly comparable with humans regarding inner ear structure and genetics, and their inner ear function can be objectively measured. Moreover, local administration of novel therapeutics is feasible in mice. The ultimate aim is to improve the treatment of inner ear diseases in humans.

Frederic Acke is an otorhinolaryngologist with a PhD on genetic hearing loss. His main research focus is the exploration of mechanisms and innovative treatment strategies, including gene therapy, for inner ear disorders.
