  • SUMMARY:
I was one of the founders of the Ghent University massive parallel sequencing (MPS) core facility NXTGNT (www.nxtgnt.com) and focused my research on topics making use of the many applications of this technology. Two post-doctoral research projects at the Scripps Research Institute (San Diego, CA, USA) enhanced my expertise in the field. I became a strong advocate of the academic core facility research setting: Instead of individual labs trying to get funding and investing in new technology and training, a fellow can perform the experiment immediately in an academic core facility. Under my leadership, NXTGNT became a hub for MPS related research, collaborating closely with dozens of academic and industrial users across the entire life science field, contributing significantly to the success of many projects, constantly striving to ensure that our technologies are at the cutting edge, bringing a level of expertise that is difficult to replicate in individual labs. Currently, I am the executive director of the NXTGNT facility, which currently employs 3 fulltime dedicated lab technicians and 3 bioinformaticians.

Filip Van Nieuwerburgh heads the UGent Next Generation Sequencing core facility NXTGNT, focusing on transcriptomics, (epi)genomics and bioinformatics.
